You Keep Using That Word: LOL

Posted By Debbie on March 20, 2015

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

LOL.

Despite grannies making mistakes, it has one main meaning: laughing out loud. You can’t see me right now, but you wrote something SO funny I am laughing out loud.

I’ve laughed out loud at things people have messaged or emailed me. And then I can reply saying LOL. Because I did.

I was once messaging a co-worker sitting in a meeting with me. I wrote something silly. She wrote back LOL. I said I can see you and you’re not laughing out loud.

And what is up with people using lol inside of a sentence? I feel like I see that all the time in Failblog screen shots.

If you are not actually laughing out loud, don’t write LOL. Write whatever you are doing. Maybe you are smiling.

Or take a page from my boyfriend. If I send him something I think is funny and he doesn’t, I get back the equivalent of, “Ah.” That acknowledges my message but doesn’t bother pretending he found it funny. I heart honestly lol.

You keep using that word. Stop using that word.
